A wonderful journey awaits, discovering breathtaking landscapes, mouthwatering food, time-honored heritage and culture, through a self-drive tour in South Africa. However, there are some things you should know when driving in foreign countries. Here are some thoughtful tips to help you enjoy great self-drive experiences.

Preparation

Of course, a valid driver’s license and a proper vehicle are must-haves before embarking on your self-drive tour. Chinese drivers should apply for an English certificate of license validation issued by a notary office and submit it to the Embassy of South Africa in China for approval. As a reminder, you should bring your license and the English certificate with you at all times, during your trip. Also, you should avoid driving overnight and stick to your carefully planned itinerary to ensure a safe trip.

Although many globally- and locally-renowned car rental companies can be found at main airports and downtowns of major cities in South Africa, it will be much easier and worry-free for you to use the DiDi Car Rental app, with just one click on the ‘Rent a Car Overseas’ option to get started. The DiDi app also provides online services for translating your driving license, making it easier to start planning your self-drive tour.

Rules to Follow

Remember to drive on the left side of the road and steer clear of other cars on the right side in South Africa. All of the steering wheels of vehicles in South Africa are located in the right front seat, which is completely opposite to China. Don’t use mobile phones or other mobile devices when driving, but in-vehicle hands-free systems are allowed. The speed limit is 120kmph on open roads, 100kmph on small roads, and 60-80kmph in city/town roads, subject to speed limit signs and local regulations. No matter what the speed limit is, just be careful and stay safe!

Petrol consumption is calculated by liters in South Africa, so you should check the petrol gauge frequently on the road to avoid running out of gas. There are a variety of petrol supplies, including unleaded petrol, 97#, 95# and 93#, among which, 95# and 93# are usually used for driving in high-altitude areas; 95# and 97# are suitable for driving along coastal areas. Cars from rental companies mostly use un-leaded petrol. Many gasoline stations are open for 24 hours with service staff, while cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted for payment.

There is toll charge for driving on many national highways between major cities in South Africa, priced from 10-200 Rands. You can register for an e-toll account in Gauteng Province, a much faster and convenient way to travel.

Special notes

Do not drive after drinking alcohol! Blood alcohol content cannot exceed 0.05%. Again, no alcohol when driving. Safety always comes first!

When passing through rural areas, pay attention to animals that may suddenly appear on the roads without safety barriers, such as dogs, chickens, sheep, horses, and in some places Hippopotamus or cows, especially at night. Slow down when you see a sign with a jumping antelope, which means you may come across an antelope passing the road. Also, do not stop the car to feed the wild animals if you encounter any, as it is very dangerous and you will be fined a serious amount of money for doing so.

Keeping these tips in mind will be very helpful for your self-drive tour. Hope all Chinese self-drive lovers to South Africa will enjoy a safe, wonderful, and fun trip!
